Preview: Newport County v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Newport County on Saturday for their 6th league game of the season.

The Chairboys claimed their first home win of the campaign on Saturday, beating Forest Green Rovers 3-1 courtesy of goals from Paris Cowan-Hall. Anthony Stewart and Luke O`Nien.

Gareth Ainsworth`s side now lie 4th in the early-season table with 3 wins, 1 draw and just 1 defeat in their opening 5 league games.

Their tally of 10 points is exactly twice as many as they had at the same stage last season.

Wanderers are also joint top scorers in League Two with 13 goals, having scored only 3 goals at the same stage last season.

Having improved in terms of points, position and attacking prowess, Wycombe will be keen to address two areas where things aren't quite so rosy.

Wanderers have conceded 18 goals in 7 outings in all competitions, and only Yeovil and Forest Green have shipped more than the 11 league goals to hit the Wycombe net.

At the same stage last season, the Blues had conceded just 6 goals in 7 games in all competitions and only 5 in the league.

The club today quoted Ainsworth as saying: " If we score more than we concede, then great. But we want clean sheets & one will come very soon."

Another area with room for improvement is Wanderers` second-half performance. So far this season the Blues have lost the second-half 6 times out of 7, conceding a whopping 13 goals after the break and scoring only 3.

On Saturday, Ainsworth made six changes to the side that lost 5-1 to Bristol Rovers, reverting as expected to the starting eleven that won the previous league game at Grimsby.

That meant recalls for Stewart, Bloomfield., Cowan-Hall, Joe Jacobson, Adebayo Akinfenwa and Craig Mackail-Smith.

They replaced Sido Jombati, Jack Williams, Marcus Bean, Nick Freeman, Dayle Southwell and Josh Umerah.

New signings Dan Scarr and Eberechi Eze were both unused substitutes after joining on loan until January.

In encouraging news, the club has quoted Ainsworth as saying that Scott Kashket, Sam Saunders and Nathan Tyson could all be in contention again very soon and were being assessed today.

Ainsworth will also check on the fitness of Bloomfield and Cowan-Hall who both limped off against Forest Green.

Newport County suffered their first league defeat of the season when they were beaten 1-0 at Exeter City last weekend.

The Exiles have won two, drawn two and lost one of their opening five matches to lie 7th in the table.

Michael Flynn`s side have played 8 games in all competitions this season, but 7 of those were on the road as a new Desso surface was installed at Rodney Parade.

County seem to have taken to their new surface, beating Chesterfield 4-1 in their first home game just 12 days ago.

Flynn made seven changes to his starting line-up last time out with Joe Day returning between the sticks.

Mark O'Brien, Mickey Demetriou, Joss Labadie, Matty Dolan, Frank Nouble and Padraig Amond were also handed recalls.

They replaced James Bittner, David Pipe, Scot Bennett, Ben Tozer, Calaum Jahraldo-Martin and Tom Owen-Evans.

Flynn has no new injury concerns ahead of this weekend's clash with the Chairboys and will check on the fitness of Lamar Reynolds and Shawn McCoulsky who are both struggling with knocks.

Marlon Jackson has missed almost two months with a hamstring injury and he remains sidelined.

Here are some early season stats...

The Man In The Middle

Saturday's referee is Ben Toner from Lancashire who was promoted to the National List of Referees in 2015.

His last Wycombe game was a 2-1 defeat at Stevenage in October 2015.

Last season, he issued 5 red and 121 yellow cards in 36 appearances.

This will be his first game of the current season.
