Preview: Port Vale v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Port Vale on Saturday for their 2nd league game of the season.

The Chairboys followed up a 2-2 draw with Lincoln City last Saturday with a 2-0 defeat at home to Fulham in the League Cup in midweek.

Having used a 4-3-3 formation against the Imps, Manager Gareth Ainsworth made seven changes to his starting line-up on Tuesday, employing a 3-5-2 formation with wing-backs for most of the match and a 4-4-2 formation for the final 20 minutes.

The lack of penetration in open play that blighted Wanderers' performance on Saturday, was evident again in the first-half on Tuesday as they failed to impress in the final third.

The second-half was a different matter, with the introduction of Nathan Tyson in a central role finally giving the Fulham defence something to ponder and the home crowd a glimmer of hope.

Fulham made eleven changes to the side that started their Championship campaign, but still looked a fluent, skilful outfit with plenty of power and pace.

In the end, a wonder strike and a poorly defended corner won the game for the visitors.

Next up are Vale who were relegated from League One last season despite a respectable haul of 36 points on home turf. Their downfall was an away tally of just 13 points featuring only 2 wins on the road.

Ainsworth will check on the fitness of Paris Cowan-Hall after he was forced off at half-time on Tuesday with a back injury.

Defender Anthony Stewart twisted his ankle in a pre-season friendly a month ago and will also be assessed ahead of the game.

Striker Scott Kashket has been struggling with a hip / groin problem for most of 2017 and no timescale has been set for his return to action

Port Vale claimed all three points with a comfortable 3-1 win at Crawley Town on the opening day of the season.

The Valiants were then knocked out of the League Cup, comfortably beaten 4-1 by Championship side Leeds United at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Michael Brown`s side finished with 10 men after Gavin Gunning was sent off for two bookable offences, picking up a one-match suspension which he will serve on Saturday.

Brown made five changes to his starting line-up in midweek, with striker Rekeil Pyke handed his full debut following his season-long loan move from Huddersfield Town.

Defender Joe Davis, midfielder Billy Reeves and strikers Anton Forrester and Dan Turner were all recalled to the side.

Goalkeeper Rob Lainton will be assessed ahead of this weekend's clash with the Chairboys having been substituted at half-time during the week following a recurrence of a thigh injury.

Brown could hand a full league debut to left-back Tyler Denton who joined Vale this week on a season-long loan from Leeds. He is likely to replace the suspended Gunning.

Winger Cristian Montano is struggling with a nerve problem in his hamstring and is rated doubtful.

Striker Tyrone Barnett, signed for an undisclosed fee from AFC Wimbledon, suffered a torn hamstring during pre-season and faces an extended spell on the sidelines.

Defender Kjell Knops has been ruled-out for the whole of the 2017/18 campaign after undergoing knee surgery.

Defender Adam Yates has joined Macclesfield Town on a month's loan to regain match fitness having missed the whole of the 2016/17 season with a serious knee injury.
