The Opposition View - Lincoln City

The Opposition View - Lincoln City

Following yesterday's 2-2 draw with Lincoln City, here are some views from the visitors' manager Danny Cowley and some of the Imps' supporters.

Cowley was pleased to start with a point.

'You never want to lose your first game, and to be able to take a point from what is a very difficult place to come is great. I would credit Wycombe, they are a very well organised team with some very good players and they ask a lot of questions of you with their direct play'.

'In the first half we competed well but perhaps got too emotionally involved and gave too many fouls away. And we just didn't pass the ball well enough, which was disappointing.'

'The boys were ever so brave in their physical output but there are several ways to show bravery, like by getting on the ball, which we did more in the second half' he said.

'It was a really tough game when you compare it to the level we've come from. If we had played that well in the National League last season we would have won 3-0'.

'So we're under no illusions as to how tough it's going to be. Today was a good challenge against a very physically strong team. That was a really hard-fought point'.

The Lincoln fans were also happy enough to start with a hard fought point.

The following extracts are taken from the Vital Lincoln forum.

Scotimp said: 'Got to be happy with 2-2 on the opening day, especially to one of last season's play-off contenders. Well done City, and with only half the first-choice defence too'.

Evenstephen said: 'Pleased with the draw especially after falling behind and gives us something to build on'.

Jordanimp said: 'Yep very solid away point. Great to see the lads fight back after the wobble towards the end of the first half. COYI!'

Mikeosullivan said: 'Strange game. Neither goalie made a save. Wycombe seemed happy with a point after an hour. Raggett, Dickie, Eardley and Ginnelly were excellent for us. Woodyard had a good second half'.

'A decent start though. Lots to work on, but enough would have been seen today to show there is nothing to be afraid of in this league'.

Moscowimp said: 'Good point, couple of soft goals from set pieces but our 2nd was a good goal. Looked like a great through ball from Woodward but haven't seen a replay of it yet. Plenty to build on. First football league point in 6 years'.

Oldguard said: 'The Cowleys responded with an intelligent tactical response that could have resulted in three points. However one point is ok by me. I think we will do ok this season'.

Gaz_Imp said: 'Bossed the 2nd half, so much better. Cowley clearly told them to play it out from the back more second half and it worked. Loads better, don't think Wycombe had a sniff. Looked a lot fitter than them too'.

'Sounds strange after conceding 2, but I wouldn't say the defence played badly, in fact I would say they were very good. Conceded from 2 set pieces and I would have to see the first again but I don't think the defence let us down on either. Don't know what Farman did with his wall, could see where to put it, wouldn't say it was struck with venom. When Rhead went off we really bossed it. But struggled to create in the box without him'.

'Ref was very poor. Got nothing major wrong, but called so much wrong, for both teams'.

PerthImp said: 'Scrappy first half with a lot of physical stuff going on. Second half was a lot better and Wycombe hardly had a chance. Bostwick is immense and will be a real star this season on this showing. Most of the team played well and I'm sure we've got plenty to look forward to. Also thought the ref was a bit inconsistent and could have been stronger'.

'Anyway, first game so we'll see how goes. Great to be back in the league and could have won with second half performance. UTI".

Rasenimp said: "Really enjoyed how we tried to play last half hour. Raggett and Woodyard fantastic, nice to see the plan b. Wycombe didn't really have a plan b'.

Raggs was a cut above today I think, I doubt many players will play so well against Akinfenwa. Especially as the ref managed their tussle so poorly - Since when can you just push a player away by his neck and battering ram him across the pitch all the time? And Raggs still won nearly every header. No wonder he got that card for dissent!'

Sincilbanks said: 'Just got back. If Wycombe are play off bound we have nothing to fear in this league. Smart tactical change in the 2nd half meant we bossed pretty much most of it. Eardley was excellent as was Ginelly. Bostwick loves a tackle and his aerial prowess in midfield looks useful. Once we made some space and passed it about in the 2nd half we looked the only team likely to win and we certainly looked much fitter at the end'.

The Electric Banana said: 'My thoughts on the match are, it was a good solid Imps performance, I was impressed by Dickie's debut, Impressed by the great tactical switch by the Cowleys at HT that put the Imps on the front foot. It was clear as Akinfenwa tired early in the second half Wycombe and huffed and puffed and the Imps became more and more dominant'.

Imp4life91 said: 'Good point away at a team that will be top 10. A good solid start and I think we've got a very solid spine which is always the main ingredient for a good team'.

Red Wimp said: 'Decent start I thought, not sure what sort of benchmark Wycombe are though. I think they might struggle based on that showing, didn't make any attempt to play football which you think is one thing would change when you move up the leagues. Following the trend of pre-season we need to score 2 to draw, 3 to win, something we need to resolve'.

'Certainly came out strong 2nd half, but neither goalkeeper had that much to do, having said that Wycombe hardly threatened at all. On a completely different note, was interesting to see Red Kites seemingly flying over the pitch'.
