Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Cambridge United

Wycombe Wanderers entertain Cambridge United on Saturday in their 46th and final league game of the season.

The Chairboys missed a golden opportunity to climb into the play-off places when they could only draw 1-1 with Morecambe at the Globe Arena last weekend.

Wanderers failed to register a shot on target until the 84th minute by which stage they had fallen behind to a Kevin Ellison strike, and striker Adebayo Akinfenwa's 89th minute equaliser wasn't enough to carry them into the top seven.

They now need an even bigger miracle than the one that saved their football league status at Torquay United three years ago.

On that occasion, the Chairboys needed to win and hope that one of their relegation rivals slipped up.

To make the play-offs on Saturday, they need to win and overtake four of the five teams immediately above them.

Beating Cambridge would take care of one, but they still need three of the others to drop points.

Should they just miss out, Wanderers will rue a poor start and mediocre finish to an inconsistent season...

Manager Gareth Ainsworth made two changes to his starting line-up last time out with winger Garry Thompson and striker Paul Hayes both handed recalls to the side. They replaced midfielder Matt Bloomfield, who dropped to the bench, and striker Scott Kashet who missed out through injury.

Defender Anthony Stewart made a welcome return as a second-half substitute after recovering from more than two months out with a medial knee ligament injury. Paris Cowan-Hall also returned as a second-half sub after a month out with an unspecified injury.

Defender Joe Jacobson will be assessed ahead of this weekend's clash with the U's after being forced off last weekend whilst Scott Kashket is still struggling with a groin injury which he first suffered in a 3-3 draw away at Plymouth Argyle back on Boxing Day.

Cambridge United claimed three precious points with a 2-0 win over Crawley Town at the Abbey Stadium last weekend.

The U's went into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat away at already-promoted Portsmouth and have now won four and lost two of their last half-a-dozen league matches.

They are 9th in the table, one point behind 7th-placed Blackpool, and need to beat the Chairboys to have any chance of clinching a play-off place on Saturday.

Manager Shaun Derry made three changes to his starting line-up last time out with loan defender Scott Wharton, midfielder James Dunne and winger Harrison Dunk all handed recalls to the side.

They were preferred to full-back Jake Carroll and midfielder Luke O'Neil, who both dropped to the bench, while striker Uche Ikpeazu missed out through injury.

Strikers Ben Williamson and Gerry McDonagh were both recalled to the bench.

Derry has no new injury concerns ahead of this weekend's clash with the Chairboys and won't take a risk on striker Barry Corr, who is struggling with a groin injury.

Striker Adam McGurk is ruled-out with a torn hamstring whilst Uche Ikpeazu has dislocated his shoulder.

Defender Josh Coulson won't be fit until next season having missed the last six months following surgery on an ankle surgery suffered in a clash with Wanderers` winger Paris Cowan-Hall in the corresponding fixture back in November, which the U's lost 2-1 to an injury-time winner.

Striker Joe Pigott has returned from his loan at Maidstone United but won't be included in the squad.
