The Opposition View - Mansfield

The Opposition View - Mansfield

Following Good Friday's disappointing defeat at home to Mansfield Town, here are some views from visiting manager Steve Evans and some of the Stags' supporters.

Evans was delighted with his side's dogged defending to see out the result.

'The boys knew we had to come and have a go and it was two types of performance,' he said.

'It had the bits that you need to have to win a game, in terms of dogged defending and two or three good saves by Jake (Kean), but we also carved out three or four good chances in the first half,' Evans continued.

'You have to deal with an aerial bombardment if you are going to get anything from Wycombe, and I don't knock it, you find a way to win a game. With Bayo and Garry who are good friends of mine, they are a real handful and the manager plays to a style that is effective.'

'We've put our bodies on the line and I`ll have to look at it back but Jake Kean, that's probably one of the best live saves I have ever seen,' he said.

The Mansfield fans were equally delighted with the result and clean sheet.

The following extracts are taken from the Stags Net Forum.

ParisStag wrote: 'Some great saves there. Looks like we rode our luck from those highlights'.

Martin Shaw wrote: 'Don't agree that we were lucky. Good goalkeeping is part of the game. They didn't hit the woodwork or have penalties turned down, which would constitute bad luck'.

London Amber Stag wrote: 'Agree with you Martin, a great battling win, the defence were on their knees at the end of the game. A massive 3 points'.

BristolStag wrote: "I can't believe it. This is definitely a rollercoaster Steve has taken us on'.

Calstag wrote: 'Crazy end to the year, pick 1/2 out of about 8 sides for the last 2 play off places'.

Keep It Simple wrote: 'Great result, just south of Coventry. A bit backs to the wall, but Keane Pearce Bennett Benning in fact just about all put a right shift in. Whoever wrote that we should play the 50 50 players.......well we are still in it!'

JimStag wrote: 'Bar the last 2 saves, Wycombe were restricted to 20 yard attempts. Whilst they had the volume of chances they didn't have the best quality opportunities to score'.

Tippy Tappy Football wrote: 'Mansfield were the better side in the 1st half and Krystian Pearce scored a well deserved goal. Alfie Potter had a good 1st half and should have put the Stags 2-0 up after some good play by Matt Green and Mal Benning. Wycombe were the better side in the 2nd half. The Stags sat too deep and could not keep possession of the ball. The Stags defence had a great game and mainly restricted Wycombe to shots from distance. Akinfenwa then looked certain to score with a header from Harriman's cross but 'Superman' keeper, Jake Kean, made a great save. He then repeated this to stop what looked like a possible own goal. A draw would have been a fair result but the Stags deserved the rub of the green after the Exeter and Donny games. My MOMs were Krystian Pearce and Jake Kean. A great day out'.
