Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Plymouth Argyle

Wycombe Wanderers entertain Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday in their 37th league game of the season.

The Chairboys scraped a point at home to Blackpool on Saturday thanks to keeper Jamal Blackman who saved a penalty four minutes from time.

The goalless draw stretched Wycombe's unbeaten run to three games, but having collected only 5 points from the last possible 24, Wanderers' firm grip on a play-off place has been loosened to a faint hope.

They may only be three points (and a vastly inferior goal-difference) behind Exeter in 7th, but on current form the Blues don't look likely to out-perform the four teams they need to surpass in order to claim the final play-off spot.

Saturday's performance was a one-dimensional, long-ball bombardment that was lethargic at times and lacked even a smidgeon of finesse.

A few more like that, and the play-off challenge will soon be a distant memory.

If ever there was a time to re-discover some form, it's when there's an opportunity to upset Derek Adams and his high-flying Pilgrims.

It won't be easy - Plymouth boast the best away record in the division and the best record against teams in the top half of the table, but upsetting the odds on Tuesday could be the spark the Chairboys need to re-ignite their season.

Gareth Ainsworth made three changes to his starting line-up last time out with defender Aaron Pierre making a welcome return to the side after three weeks out with an ankle injury.

Midfielder Luke O'Nien and winger Paris Cowan-Hall were also handed recalls with defender Will de Havilland and winger Garry Thompson both dropping to the bench and Matt Bloomfield missing out through injury.

The previously injured Dominic Gape and Sam Saunders both returned to the bench and we even had some injury news on Anthony Stewart who is almost certainly out for the season.

There's still no news on strikers Scott Kashket and Paul Hayes.

Plymouth Argyle claimed all three points with a 2-0 win over play-off chasers Mansfield Town at Field Mill on Saturday.

It was a positive response from the Pilgrims who went into the game on the back of a surprise 3-0 defeat at home to Blackpool in midweek.

Derek Adams' side have won only two of their last seven league matches, drawing two and losing the other three.

After Saturday's victory they remain in second place in the League Two table, four points behind leaders Doncaster Rovers and ten points clear of fourth placed Stevenage.

Adams made two changes to his starting line-up last time out with defender Jakub Sokolik returning after a groin strain and striker Jordan Slew also being handed a recall.

Striker Jake Jervis dropped to the bench and influential loan winger Matthew Kennedy missed out through injury.

Full-back Gary Miller made his first appearance in two months as a late substitute after recovering from an ankle ligament injury.

Striker Ryan Taylor was substituted at half-time on Saturday with a knee injury and is rated doubtful for Tuesday night.

Adams will check upon the fitness of midfielders Antoni Sarcevic (ankle) and Kennedy (knock).

Midfielder Connor Smith (ankle ligaments) is back in training but won't be available for another at least another week whilst loan striker Paul-Arnola Garita (hamstring) remains sidelined.

Midfielder David Ijaha is still recovering from pelvic surgery whilst striker Ryan Brunt continues his rehabilitation following a year out with an anterior cruciate knee ligament (ACL) injury.
