'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Bristol Rovers

Wycombe Wanderers entertain Bristol Rovers on Saturday in their 45th league game of the season.

Monday's results changed very little at the foot of the table.

Bottom side Torquay United gave themselves a glimmer of hope by winning at Exeter, but the other six relegation candidates all lost.

In Wycombe's case it was a 1-0 defeat at promotion-chasing Fleetwood, a result most would have expected before the game, but which felt like an opportunity lost when the hosts were reduced to ten men after only 12 minutes.

Now we're really down to the nitty gritty. The Blues have two games to save themselves, both against opponents in even greater danger of the drop.

A quick look at the stats for Wanderers and Rovers reveals the following low-lights...

The Chairboys have the third-worst home record in the division.

The Gas have the worst away record.

The Chairboys have the worst record after half-time, having won the second-half only 8 times in 44 attempts.

Rovers are bottom of the current form guide with only 1 point from their last 5 games.

Both sides have won only 1 of their last 10 games.

Looking for subtle differences between the two sides... Wycombe have scored only 4 goals in their last 10 games, whereas Rovers have bagged 8.... so that's a worry.

On the other hand, Rovers have conceded 18 goals in the same period and Wycombe only 11... which offers some hope.

It's anyone's game, and even desire won't help. Because for every Wycombe fan, player, manager or director praying for a win, there's a Rovers' counterpart selling his soul for the same thing.

Both sides have a long injury list, but to be honest, even when everyone was fit, it didn't make much difference.

Rovers' danger-man is midfielder John-Joe O'Toole who has bagged 15 goals this season and has always looked a handful.

Then there's the curse of the former player and the prospect of Matt Harrold slamming one home in the same way Chris Zebroski did just a few weeks ago at Newport.

As far as Wycombe are concerned, this is a game for players who really care about the club, whether they're stalwarts like Matt Bloomfield or youngsters who have spent years coming through the system.

Given the injuries to Johnson, Morgan and Cowan-Hall, I'd start as follows and hope for a hero...

Ingram

Rowe - Pierre - Stewart - Wood

Bloomfield - Scowen - Lewis - Kretzschmar

McClure - Morias

Best case scenario - If Wycombe beat Rovers and Northampton lose at Dagenham, the Blues will have secured their league status thanks to a goal difference which would be at least 12 better than that of the Cobblers.

Worst case scenario - Wycombe lose to Rovers and Northampton avoid defeat at Dagenham. This would plunge the Blues into the relegation zone and take survival out of their own hands ahead of a trip to Torquay on the final day of the season.

Here's what the other candidates are up to...

Oxford v Accrington

Wimbledon v Morecambe

Exeter v Scunthorpe

Dagenham v Northampton

Mansfield v Torquay

The Man In The Middle

Saturday's referee is David Coote from Nottinghamshire who was promoted to the National List of Referees in 2010. His three previous Wycombe games were all at Adams Park - a 1-0 win over Bury in December 2010, a 2-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers in February 2012, and most recently, a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers in December 2012. During the current campaign Mr Coote has issued 4 red and 98 yellow cards in 32 games.

Prediction

Wycombe 1 Bristol Rovers 1
