Preview: Fleetwood Town v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Fleetwood Town on Easter Monday for their 44th League game of the season.

Good Friday`s showdown with Northampton Town was billed as one of the biggest games the club had faced since entering the Football League in 1993, and a bumper crowd of 7,004 turned up to see a 1-1 draw that changed little for either team at the bottom of League Two.

The game started disastrously for the Chairboys as goalkeeper Matt Ingram dropped a routine Ricky Ravenhill cross into his own net after 12 minutes. Aaron Pierre equalised with a towering header into the top corner from a Matt Bloomfield free kick just six minutes later.

Wanderers had the clearest chances to earn what would have been a crucial win in the second half. Sam Wood`s cross was headed onto the bar by substitute Dean Morgan, but the biggest drama unfolded in the ninth of ten additional minutes. Substitute Max Kretzschmar`s free kick was superbly tipped onto the bar by Cobblers goalkeeper Matt Duke, but after Leon Johnson had nudged the ball towards goal and Dean Morgan tapped it in, the linesman raised his flag. Replays have since suggested Morgan was well onside, but Johnson arguably gained an advantage by being offside from the original free kick.

Results elsewhere were welcome. Torquay United are now effectively relegated, seven points adrift with only nine to play for following a 1-0 defeat at home to Dagenham and Redbridge courtesy of a second half Medy Elito penalty. Anything but a win in the Devon derby against Exeter City at St James Park tomorrow will end their stay in the Football League.

More importantly, the other contenders also failed to take advantage of the Cobblers and Wycombe both dropping points. Hartlepool United lost their sixth consecutive game, 3-0 at Burton Albion, and now sit precariously just two points ahead of the trap door. Morecambe picked up a useful 96th minute equaliser against Scunthorpe and meet Pool tomorrow.

Perhaps most significantly, Bristol Rovers lost 3-2 at Fratton Park against Portsmouth to ensure the Pirates remain sandwiched between Northampton and Wanderers with all three teams on 47 points. Matt Harrold twice equalised for Rovers in the opening period but Wes Fogden made himself a particularly popular figure at Adams Park by scoring a second half winner. If defeat wasn`t bad enough for Rovers, they now have a catalogue of injury concerns. Right backs Danny Woodards and Michael Smith have been ruled out for the season whilst winger Fabian Broghammer also picked up a knock. To compound their woes, key player Jon-Joe O`Toole was benched for the game after a fallout with manager Darrell Clarke.

Next up for Wycombe is a trip to Highbury Stadium to face promotion hopefuls Fleetwood Town, who won 2-1 at Cheltenham on Good Friday. With Bristol Rovers facing Rochdale at the Memorial Stadium at an earlier 1pm kick off time, the result will either give the Wycombe faithful a big boost or make them even more desperate as the latest huge match kicks off.

Fleetwood are a relatively new opponent for Wycombe but besides a dismal 2-0 FA Cup defeat in Fylde under Gary Waddock they have fared relatively well in recent meetings. Bruno Andrade earned a 1-0 success up north in October 2013 as Gareth Ainsworth took the reins following Waddock`s sacking. The double was completed in the reverse fixture courtesy of a last gasp Anthony Stewart header. Earlier this season the sides drew 1-1 at Adams Park with long-time nemesis Jon Parkin cancelling out Stuart Lewis` opener.

Wycombe have injury concerns of their own for the long journey north. Paris Cowan-Hall limped off after half an hour after being rushed back from his earlier injury and is a big doubt. Aaron Pierre picked up a shoulder injury and Leon Johnson also sustained a knock in the latter stages of Good Friday`s game. Gary Doherty remains sidelined and the game will come too soon for Charles Dunne.

Gareth Ainsworth may line his side up as follows (4-5-1):

-------------------------------Matt Ingram------------------------------------

Danny Rowe—Anthony Stewart-----Leon Johnson-----Sam Wood

N Arnold----S Lewis-----J Scowen----M Bloomfield----M Kretzschmar

------------------------------Dean Morgan--------------------------------------

Substitutes: Charlie Horlock, Marvin McCoy, Aaron Pierre, Matt McClure, Anthony Jeffrey, Jo Kuffour, Junior Morias.

Gary Alexander could line his side up something like this (4-4-2):

Matty Blair -----Antoni Sarcevic------Alan Goodall-------Josh Morris

------------------------Iain Hume-------------David Ball-------------------
