Preview: Newport County v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Newport County on Saturday for their 42nd League game of the season.

Following last Saturday`s 2-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge, Wycombe remain three points clear of the drop zone and also enjoy a vastly superior goal difference to second-bottom side Northampton Town.

The Cobblers won 1-0 at Accrington Stanley and Portsmouth also won 1-0 at Fratton Park against Hartlepool United, but Exeter City and Morecambe both lost which meant they were sucked closer to the relegation battle.

Wanderers deserved their win, although the dismissal of Daggers defender Scott Doe on the stroke of half time for strangling and shoving Steven Craig did aid them in their quest for a vital three points. Craig himself gave Wycombe the lead in the 47th minute from the penalty spot after Stuart Lewis was tripped. Max Kretzschmar sealed the win in the 58th minute after Matt McClure had laid a Sam Wood cross perfectly into his path.

Saturday`s opponents Newport lost 2-1 at home to Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday evening and will have to see out the season without defender Ishmael Yakubu. County have endured a terrible run since Christmas, dropping from 5th place on Boxing Day to 14th place today with only two wins in their last twenty league outings.

On paper, this match represents a good opportunity for the Chairboys ahead of next week's crucial six-pointer against Northampton at Adams Park.

This is Newport`s first season back in the Football League since 1988 and the only previous league meeting between the two sides came on Boxing Day at Adams Park. Mike Flynn scored the only goal of the game from midfielder Adam Chapman`s through ball. Wycombe searched in vain for an equaliser and McClure had the most presentable opening but he delayed for too long and the chance was blocked.

The centre back pairing of Aaron Pierre and Danny Rowe worked a treat last week and Gareth Ainsworth is unlikely to change a successful, winning formula. Matt Bloomfield was substituted in the first half but the injury is not thought to be serious. Meanwhile, Paris Cowan-Hall and Charles Dunne are nearing a return after resuming training, but long term absentee Gary Doherty is definitely out, as is fellow centre back Tommy Fletcher.

Elsewhere, it`s safe to say Matt Spring will not be involved despite Sam Togwell returning to Chesterfield early from his loan spell. Anthony Stewart and Leon Johnson may return to the bench and Ainsworth is likely to stick with the 4-1-3-2 formation.

The Chairboys might line up something like this (4-1-3-2):

-------------------------------Matt Ingram------------------------------------

Marvin McCoy----—Aaron Pierre-------Danny Rowe------Sam Wood

-------------------------------- Stuart Lewis ----------------------------------

Nick Arnold-----------------Josh Scowen---------------Max Kretzschmar

-----------------Matt McClure-------------Steven Craig-----------------------

Substitutes: Charlie Horlock, Anthony Stewart, Matt Bloomfield, Jo Kuffour, Reece Styche, Dean Morgan, Jon-Paul Pittman.

County boss Justin Edinburgh may line his side up as follows (4-4-2):

----------------------------------Ian McLoughlin--------------------------------

Chris Jackson------- Kevin Feely ------- Darcy Blake ---- Andrew Hughes

Max Porter -----Lee Minshull------Robbie Willmott------- --- Mike Flynn

--------------Shaun Jeffers---------Chris Zebroski----------------

Substitutes: David Pipe, Andy Sandell, Ryan Burge, Naylor, Christian Jolley, Arnadi-Holloway, Rene Howe.
