Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Dagenham & Redbridge

Wycombe Wanderers entertain Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday in their 41st League game of the season.

Last Saturday`s 0-0 stalemate with automatic promotion favourites Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park represented a bonus point for Wycombe. The hosts looked a threat from set pieces but Matt Ingram sharply denied the Iron on two occasions and the Chairboys successfully stifled their opposition. They might even have nicked all three points but chances came and went. Steven Craig`s header was too high and Max Kretzschmar wastefully fired over on the turn from six yards before having a later effort blocked at the near post by Sam Slocombe.

However, with Portsmouth winning 2-1 at Rodney Parade against Newport County, it wasn`t enough to prevent the Wanderers from slipping to 22nd position, just one place above the relegation trapdoor.

The good news is that Northampton lost 3-0 at home to Bury at Sixfields on Saturday, meaning there is a three point cushion for Wycombe, which effectively counts as four points given the Blues` goal difference is 12 superior to that of the Cobblers.

Meanwhile, Saturday`s opponents Dagenham kept their faint play-off hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Gary Waddock`s Oxford United at Victoria Park. As the game edged towards stoppage time, Luke Howell`s shot rebounded off two Oxford defenders and comically looped over goalkeeper Ryan Clarke and into the net to give the Daggers all three points. Their current position of 10th represents an excellent season under Wayne Burnett operating within modest resources.

Recent meetings between the two sides have had mixed results. In the 2008/09 season Peter Taylor`s Wycombe did the double over the Daggers. Loanee striker Simon Church was sent off in a September clash at Adams Park but a headed brace from defender Mike Williamson was enough to earn a 2-1 rearguard win. That was largely thanks to future Chairboy Ben Strevens missing a last minute penalty for John Still`s side having earlier scored their solitary goal. Jon-Paul Pittman scored his first Wycombe goal in a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture.

The two sides didn't meet again until last season and the match in London will not hold fond memories for the Wanderers' supporters in attendance. It was Gareth Ainsworth`s first fixture in temporary charge after the sacking of Gary Waddock. Debutant Josh Scowen was the sole positive as young striker Olly Taylor looked way out of his depth before being substituted at half time. The hosts cruised to a 3-0 win, courtesy of Dwight Gayle, Michael Spillane and Billy Bingham.

In January 2013 a low Sam Wood strike earned the Chairboys a 1-0 win at Adams Park after supporters had helped clear snow surrounding the stadium. The last meeting between the two sides saw Dagenham run out 2-0 winners in November 2013 courtesy of goals from Afolabi Obafemi and a Rhys Murphy penalty, for which Anthony Stewart was sent off and later saw his red card rescinded.

Wycombe go into the Adams Park fixture with a number of long term absentees. Gary Doherty, Charles Dunne, Paris Cowan-Hall and Tommy Fletcher remain on the treatment table. Matt Spring remains a mystery case!

Matt McClure could return from a slight hamstring complaint, Anthony Stewart may also be reinstated but Leon Johnson remains a doubt after being ruled out of the last two fixtures. Gareth Ainsworth is likely to revert to the 4-1-3-2 formation after changing things around and playing Steven Craig up front alone last week.

The Chairboys might line up something like this (4-1-3-2):

-------------------------------Matt Ingram------------------------------------

Nick Arnold---—Aaron Pierre—------Daniel Rowe----Sam Wood

--------------------------------Josh Scowen-----------------------------------

Stuart Lewis----------------Sam Togwell-----------Matt Bloomfield

-----------------Dean Morgan-------------Steven Craig-----------------------

Substitutes: Charlie Horlock, Anthony Stewart, Max Kretzschmar, Anthony Jeffrey, Reece Styche, Matt McClure, Jon-Paul Pittman.

Dagenham boss Wayne Burnett may line his side up as follows (4-4-2):

---------------------------------Chris Lewington--------------------------------

Gavin Hoyte-------Brian Saah------------Scott Doe---- Jack Conners

Abu Ogogo------Luke Howell----------Luke Norris----------Medy Elito

--------------------------Blair Turgott---Ashley Chambers----------------

Substitutes: Jordan Seabright, Lawson D`Ath, Billy Bingham, Chris Dickson, Sean Shields, Ian Gayle, Adebayo Azeez
