Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Rochdale

Wycombe Wanderers entertain league leaders Rochdale on Saturday in their 38th League game of the season.

Tuesday night`s 1-1 draw at Cheltenham Town has taken the Chairboys up to 19th position, four points clear of the relegation zone. It may sound like a broken record, but the congested nature of the division means Wycombe could rise as high as 15th or fall as low as 22nd on Saturday.

It was a point that Wycombe merited after being unfortunate to find themselves behind. Steven Craig saw an early goal disallowed and another strike hit the outside of the post. Max Kretzschmar was also denied by Scott Brown as the Chairboys failed to make their chances count. Byron Harrison headed the hosts into a 68th minute lead but Dean Morgan cancelled that out with a 79th minute penalty after fellow substitute Jo Kuffour was fouled in the penalty area by Robins defender Steve Elliott.

Wycombe and Dale have met frequently in recent seasons. In the 2008/09 campaign both teams recorded 1-0 away-wins against the other. Chris Zebroski scored the solitary goal at Spotland during the Chairboys` 18-game unbeaten run at the start of the League Two season under Peter Taylor. A last minute Adam Le Fondre goal gave Rochdale a crucial victory at Adams Park after Marek Stech had sliced his clearance, marring an otherwise faultless Man of the Match performance. Wycombe went on to gain promotion, sneaking up on the final day despite losing 2-1 at home to Notts County.

The sides next renewed acquaintances in the 2011/12 season with Wycombe managed by Gary Waddock. A dismal performance at Spotland saw an early Scott Donnelly strike rendered meaningless as Ashley Grimes scored a brace to secure a deserved win for Dale. Wycombe exacted revenge in February 2012 however, as two goals from Stuart Beavon and a cheeky back-heeled third from central defender Dave Winfield secured a comfortable win. Both sides ended the season in the relegation places and were to meet again in League Two the following campaign.

Wycombe will have wondered how they lost their previous home encounter against Rochdale as Joel Grant combined with Dennis Oli to produce a lobbed finish, equalising Grimes` 5th minute goal. The hosts dominated the second half but a last minute deflected strike from Bobby Grant earned the visitors a fortunate victory. The return meeting saw Wanderers captain Stuart Lewis open the scoring but it was a brief celebration as the hosts eventually ran out easy 4-1 winners.

The most recent meeting was a win for Rochdale in September, as goals from Scott Hogan, Michael Rose and Joe Bunney gave the hosts a 3-0 head-start after just fifteen minutes. The Chairboys mustered a spirited response but replies from Matt McClure and Jo Kuffour still weren`t enough and the game ended 3-2.

Rochdale travel to the Chair Metropolis boosted by a 3-0 win at Northampton Town on Tuesday evening. Matt Lund scored the second of those three goals to make it three goals in two games, but he will miss Saturday`s game after picking up two bookings at Sixfields. Ian Henderson, one of the division`s standout players, also scored in that game and Wanderers will hope they can do a similar job on him as they did on Chesterfield winger Gary Roberts recently.

Wycombe have selection problems of their own. Longer term absentees Gary Doherty, Charles Dunne, Paris Cowan-Hall and Tommy Fletcher remain on the treatment table. Matt Spring remains a mystery case! Matt Bloomfield, Matt McClure and Steven Craig all picked up what Gareth Ainsworth described as 'worrying knocks` at Cheltenham and are all doubtful. Sam Togwell returns from a one match ban and Stuart Lewis may also return to the squad from a combination of injury and illness.

The Chairboys might line up something like this (4-1-3-2):

-------------------------------Matt Ingram------------------------------------

Marvin McCoy—Leon Johnson—Anthony Stewart—Sam Wood

-------------------------------Josh Scowen-----------------------------------

Nick Arnold----------------Sam Togwell-----------Max Kretzschmar

-----------------Dean Morgan-------------Jo Kuffour-----------------------

Substitutes: Charlie Horlock, Aaron Pierre, Jesse Kewley-Graham, Anthony Jeffrey, Reece Styche, Steven Craig, Jon-Paul Pittman.

Rochdale manager Keith Hill may line his side up as follows (4-4-2):

-----------------------------------Josh Lillis----------------------------------

Joe Rafferty-----Peter Cavanagh----Ashley Eastham----Michael Rose

Matt Done------Jack O`Connell-------Jamie Allen-----Peter Vincenti

---------------------Joe Bunney-------Ian Henderson--------------------

Substitutes: Rhys Bennett, Jason Kennedy, George Donnelly, Scott Tanser, George Porter, Robbie Thomson, Graham Cummins

Saturday's referee is Carl Boyeson from East Yorkshire who was promoted to the National list of Referees in 2002. Last season he took charge of Wycombe's 4-1 defeat at Port Vale. The Chairboys were 1-0 up in this game when Mr Boyeson sent Jo Kuffour off in the 46th minute. During the current campaign he's issued 2 red and 77 yellow cards in 26 games.
