Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Plymouth Argyle

Wycombe Wanderers entertain Plymouth Argyle at Adams Park on Tuesday evening in their 35th League game of the season.

A recent revival has seen the Chairboys make it six games unbeaten.

In a 2-1 victory over Hartlepool United at the weekend. Jack Barmby gave the visitors a half time lead against the run of play, but headed goals from forwards Dean Morgan and Matt McClure earned Wycombe another vital three points.

Plymouth have also been in good form and harbour hopes of sneaking a play-off place, but they came unstuck at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday, losing 2-1 at Bristol Rovers. 1500 Argyle supporters travelled to Bristol but a Neal Trotman header sandwiched in between Chris Beardsley and Kaid Mohamed goals wasn`t enough and the Pilgrims now lie in 8th position with 48 points from 34 games, seven points ahead of the Blues.

The results at the weekend have made League Two even more condensed, and Wanderers now sit in 18th place, seven points off Northampton in the final relegation spot but also just nine points off a play-off place. A win on Tuesday could see the Blues move as high as 11th or fall as low as 22nd, such is the tight nature of the division.

The first meeting between the sides came in October 1994 as Martin O`Neill`s side earned a 2-2 draw courtesy of a brace from Cyrille Regis. In a total of 17 previous meetings, 6 have been drawn and the Pilgrims edge it 6-5 on wins.

Recent history has been kinder to the Chairboys, but despite this, in August 2007 Paul Lambert`s side were dumped out of the League Cup at the first hurdle at Home Park and were fortunate to only lose 2-1 with a deflected Stefan Oakes goal all they could muster.

The two sides next met last season in what was a tumultuous 2012/13 anniversary campaign for the Wanderers. Wycombe were looking to stabilise after the recent sacking of manager Gary Waddock and a 1-1 draw with Argyle at Adams Park was the catalyst to do so. Caretaker player-manager Gareth Ainsworth led from the front as his pinpoint right wing cross was headed in from close range by McClure. The visitors earned a share of the spoils courtesy of a Guy Madjo header just after the interval.

The reverse fixture came in late December 2012, and McClure again scored to seal a 1-0 rearguard success. There was more joy to be had at Home Park in September of this season as Sam Wood, Morgan and Billy Knott all scored in an impressive 3-0 win to take Wycombe into a play-off position.

Gareth Ainsworth will be without Paris Cowan-Hall who hobbled out of the action as early as the 9th minute against Hartlepool. Also missing will be Josh Scowen who picked up his tenth booking of the season, meaning a two game suspension. Wycombe are also without injured pair Gary Doherty and Charles Dunne.

With the manager reluctant to use Matt Spring and unlikely to throw in youngster Jesse Kewley-Graham, captain Stuart Lewis might be rushed back from injury to replace Scowen. If Lewis isn`t ready the formation might be altered to accommodate Anthony Jeffrey on the wing with Kretzschmar moving inside in a more conventional 4-4-2.

Dean Morgan and Matt McClure are likely to start up front after both ended their respective goal droughts. There is no love lost between Morgan and ex-Chesterfield manager John Sheridan, who received an earful from the striker after he scored in a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture.

For Wycombe, the two enforced changes might see thems line up something like this (4-1-3-2):

---------------------------------Matt Ingram--------------------------------

Marvin McCoy—Anthony Stewart—Leon Johnson—Sam Wood

---------------------------------Stuart Lewis--------------------------------

Nick Arnold----------------Matt Bloomfield--------Max Kretzschmar

------------------Dean Morgan-----------Matt McClure------------------

Substitutes: Charlie Horlock, Aaron Pierre, Jesse Kewley-Graham, Anthony Jeffrey, Steven Craig, Jo Kuffour, Jon-Paul Pittman.

As for Plymouth, Sheridan's side might line up as follows (3-5-2):

------------------------------------Luke McCormick----------------------------

-----------Maxime Blanchard-----Neal Trotman--------Curtis Nelson-------

---D Berry---C Hourihane—--P Wotton—--L Young—--M Parsons---

------------------------Lewis Alessandra------Reuben Reid-----------------

Substitutes: Cameron Dawson (GK), Ben Purrington, Tyler Harvey, Romuald Boco, Andres Gurrieri, Tope Obadeyi, Marvin Morgan.
