Preview: Southend United v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Southend United on Saturday for their 33rd league game of the season.

The grim record of one win in eighteen league games has been confined to the history books as Blues' fans bask in a four-match unbeaten run with back-to-back victories in the past week thanks to goals from midfielder Max Kretzschmar.

Only Dean Morgan has scored more league goals than young Kretzschmar, who now has five, including the winning goals against Hartlepool, Bristol Rovers, Chesterfield and most recently Exeter.

His winner against the Grecians was a delicious 30 yard curler that was a beacon of light in a hard slog on a heavy pitch.

Coming hot on the heels of his penalty against Chesterfield, Max's second winner in four days earned the Blues their eighth point in four games, which is just as well, as a fascinating battle begins to take shape in the nether regions of the table.

Second-bottom Northampton have also recorded back-to-back wins as they begin to find some form under new manager Chris Wilder. Above them, only three points separate York City in 12th and Accrington Stanley in 22nd place.

It's anyone's game in league two this season, and there's no way Wycombe can afford to slip into another dismal run of results.

Three clean sheets in the last four games is a huge positive. It's doubled our tally for the season, and if the other lot don't score they can't beat you.

It's particularly helpful if you don't score many yourself, and with only three goals in the last six games, that's a major concern for the Chairboys.

The last time a Wycombe striker scored was 12 games ago when Dean Morgan bagged one at Northampton in December, unless you count Paris Cowan-Hall as a frontman, in which case it's 9 games ago against Morecambe.

Next up are Southend who currently occupy the final play-off spot.

But don't let that worry you. The Shrimpers are 24th in the form guide with only two points from their last five games, and they haven't won any of their last eight in all competitions.

And although they boast the division's best record against top-half opposition, the Shrimpers have fared even worse than Wycombe in games against teams in the bottom half of the table.
