Preview: Exeter City v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Exeter City on Tuesday for their 32nd league game of the season.

The Chairboys ended over four months of frustration on Saturday when they won at Adams Park for the first time since October 12th.

And what better way to do it than by beating league-leaders Chesterfield, with Max Kretzschmar`s first-half penalty deservedly inflicting defeat on the Spireites for only the 6th time this season.

If confidence was low following a soul-sapping run of one win in eighteen league games, matching the table-toppers in every department, keeping a clean sheet against the division`s top scorers, and most importantly, banking all three points, will surely have restored belief.

Results elsewhere kept Wycombe in 22nd place despite their victory, but they now have a cushion of five points between themselves and the two sides currently occupying the relegation zone.

Next up are the Grecians, and if you thought Wycombe`s home form was bad, spare a thought for the Exeter fans who haven`t seen their side win at St James Park since October 5th.

Paul Tisdale`s side started like a house on fire, winning four of their first five home games, but have failed to win any of the last ten.

The Blues have already won there this season, recording a 2-0 victory in the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy in September courtesy of goals from Matt McClure and Anthony Stewart.

Following Saturday`s victory over the Spireites, Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth acknowledged that it would be of little use if his side immediately embarked on another barren run, and he`ll be looking for back-to-back wins and more misery for the Grecians.

Fifteen games remain for Wycombe, six at Adams Park and nine on their travels.

So far this season, the Blues have done well away from home, a trait that will need to continue as they attempt to distance themselves further from the danger zone.

Looking at the stats, both sides fare better against teams in the top half of the table and struggle against their peers. Exeter are ranked 20th for their results against sides currently in the bottom half, while Wycombe have the worst record of the lot and are ranked 24th.

It`s also worth noting that the Chairboys have the 7th best record in the division for their first-half performances, while the Grecians come into their own after the break with a ranking of 9th.

The Man In The Middle

Saturday's referee is Michael Bull from Essex who is enjoying his first full season as a Football League referee. Last season he took charge of just one Football League match, which happened to be Wycombe's 4-0 win over York City.

Earlier this season he took charge of Wycombe v York again, the result this time a 1-1 draw. During the current campaign he's issued 1 red and 51 yellow cards in 16 games.

Prediction

Exeter 1 Wycombe 1
