'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Preview: Cheltenham Town v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Cheltenham Town on Saturday for their 31st league game of the season.

A much improved performance in the 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town on Tuesday gave Blues' fans a lift after some disappointing displays in recent weeks.

Stuart Lewis scored his third goal in ten games to give Wycombe a half time lead. It was the first goal Wanderers had scored at Adams Park for eight and a quarter hours and the crowd went wild.

It was also a scorcher, and no-one deserved it more than Lewis who runs himself into the ground every time he dons a Wycombe shirt and has specifically worked on his shooting to add goals to his game.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the skipper's energy levels and when the Blues flagged as usual, Fleetwood were able to call on the services of 200K+ striker Jamille Matt who immediately caused problems, assisting Jon Parkin's equaliser and almost winning the game in the dying seconds.

Under normal circumstances, a draw with monied Fleetwood would be considered a reasonable point, but when you're as desperate for a victory as Wycombe, it's difficult not to be disappointed.

The unwanted stat now reads one win in the last eighteen league games, but the time has come to stop dwelling on what's already happened and start trying to affect what's yet to come.

Yes, we Wycombe fans have had an awful time of it for the last four months. It's been no fun at all, gates have certainly fallen as a result, and we all think things could have been done better, and maybe they could.

None of that matters now. We have just 16 games to pull away from the relegation zone and preserve our Football League status.

The manager is going nowhere. Any attempts to undermine his position are futile. It's also clear that he and the players are hurting as much as the fans, it was plain to see on the faces of Stuart Lewis and Sam Wood at Mansfield.

Wycombe fans can be brilliant when the mood takes them. Away from home they usually are, and the improved atmosphere on Tuesday was a reminder of how much better it is at Adams Park when the crowd really gets behind the team.

What should come first, the performance or the support? It doesn't really matter any more. The Conference is a difficult place to escape and we don't want to go there. The next 16 games are all cup finals.

The players won't win them all, but with our help they might win enough to survive.

First up are the Robins who have an identical record to ours over the last five games.
