The Opposition View - Morecambe

Following yesterday's 1-1 draw at Morecambe, here are some thoughts on the game from the Shrimps' manager Jim Bentley and a few of their fans.

The Morecambe boss wasn't happy with his side's defending for the Wycombe goal.

"We're not good enough in both boxes at the moment. We're not creating enough and we're not defending well enough," he said.

"There's a big board up in the dressing room, and in capital letters it says, 'you pick up Paris Cowan-Hall', 'you pick up Doherty.' There's nothing else we can do."

I just wish I was in there myself nodding a few away, I used to love that part of the game."

"If you take set plays out of the last four games we've kept four clean sheets."

Talking about his side's second-half comeback, Bentley said: "We changed one or two things around and Joe Mwasile coming on shook things up a bit and gave the crowd, who were exceptional today, a lift."

"His enthusiasm when he got on the ball seemed to get people on the edge of their seats. You just had a feeling that we were going to get the goal."

"At home you're looking to win, and going into the game Wycombe were on a sticky spell and had only won once in 11 or something, so overall I'm disappointed that we haven't won it but I'm thankful that Kevin Ellison's chipped in with another goal and we've got a point."

"You've got to be pleased with a point when you're 1-0 down and it looks like you're not going to get back into it."

The Morecambe fans had a variety of opinions.

The following extracts are taken from Shrimpsvoices and Twitter.

'Game totally affected by terrible ground conditions. I usually come on here and plead for football played on the deck. Totally impossible today so I'll take a point from what was from both teams a poor game due entirely to the conditions.'

'Point gained after another poor performance. Another goal conceded from a corner too easily. Good vocal support today though.'

'Last five minutes, Wycombe were desperate for a point, but the Shrimps were asking all the questions.'

RedRedWine wrote:
'So disappointing to concede a goal to another set piece, especially when the second shortest player on the pitch is on the end of it! We had plenty of ball in the second half, but not many chances. The equaliser was a bit fortuitous in that Wycombe's Craig was injured and needed to go off, but The Chairboys couldn't get the ball out of play. Best player on the pitch for me was Doherty; class act at the back for the Chairboys and had the beating of Sampson in the air all day long. Cowan-Hall who got the goal also looked a tidy player, but seemed to drift in and out of the game.'

Posh wrote:
'Highlight for me was being sat behind the away dugout. A fantastic spot where some people just spoon out grief to the opposition manager. In this case the only thing Gareth Ainsworth said when we were in possession was 'squeeze' (about 200 times). Cue shouts of 'Glenn Tilbrook' and 'Jools Holland!'.'

Seasider9601 wrote:
'I thought Wycombe all round were a 'thuggish' bunch. Disappointing when you consider the type of player their manager, Gareth Ainsworth, was in his day.'

@ockerschitchat wrote:
'They've always been a strong, tough, physical side but with talent.'

Now_Then wrote:
'I am not sure if it's happened since Ainsworth took over, but most of their players looked like they were wearing shoulder pads! The left back (11) looked like the missing link!'

Heysham_Shrimp wrote:
'Their number 6 was one of the worst players I have seen playing league football. Even when he wasn't under pressure he was hacking it out of play every time he had it on the ground. Jack Sampson got no change out of former White Hart Lane defender Gary Doherty though.'

shrimper wrote:
'Our fans were excellent today. One down, everything a bit flat on the pitch, then a few raucous chants and you could see the team, led by the introduction of Mwasile, visibly lifted and with an extra spring in their step. Cracking display, well done, just what was needed!'
