FA Cup Preview: Wycombe v Preston

Wycombe Wanderers entertain Preston North End on Saturday in the second-round of the FA Cup.

The match will come as a welcome distraction for the Blues, who are without a win in seven league games, but have saved some of their best performances for cup competitions.

With two giant killings already under their belt, Gareth Ainsworth's side will attempt to beat league one opposition for a third time this season, having knocked Bristol City out of the JPT and Crewe out of the FA Cup.

The only Wycombe fans to have seen their side win in the last ten games are the 81 stalwarts who travelled to Gresty Road in mid-November, but despite such a disappointing run of results, an impressive following of 681 made the trek to Pompey on Wednesday night.

After watching their side dominate the first half and open the scoring through Matt McClure, the Wanderers' faithful saw the hosts turn the game around after the break and take a 2-1 lead into time added on.

Then, in what will hopefully prove to be a turning point in their fortunes, Wycombe's Anthony Stewart powered a bullet header into the Pompey net to rescue a point and send the frozen fans home with smiles on their faces. It was only a draw, but it felt like a win.

Home gates are down for a variety of reasons, but there's no doubt that the Chairboys still have a tremendously loyal core support that does them proud on occasions like Wednesday.

Wycombe is a club owned by its fans. The supporters' Trust have done a sterling job to keep it afloat during the turbulent times that immediately followed the departure of the previous owner, and they have continued to make great strides on the road to self-sufficiency.

Victory over Preston on Saturday followed by a third-round tie at somewhere like the Emirates would be a financial bonus and a fitting reward for a club that's trying to do things the right way. That's the dream. The players can only take care of what happens on the pitch, the draw is in the lap of the gods.

The Lilywhites will certainly provide stiff opposition. Currently third in league-one, they've lost only twice on the road all season, and one of those defeats was at Turf Moor, home of Championship promotion-chasers Burnley.

Currently on an excellent run, they're unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions, winning six and drawing three.

Wycombe may have only beaten Preston twice in 13 attempts, and not for nearly 20 years, but when it really mattered they followed up an earlier victory at Deepdale with a 4-2 win in the 1993/94 play-off final at Wembley.

More recently, the two sides met in league-one in 2011/12, the Lillywhites winning a couple of high-scoring encounters, 4-3 and 3-2.

Saturday also sees the return to Adams Park of former Wycombe striker Stuart Beavon.
