In-form Blues face basement battle in Devon

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Exeter City on Tuesday for their 38th league game of the season.

The league table currently shows Wycombe in 21st place with 36 points from 37 games and Exeter in 23rd spot with 34 points from the same number of games.

Exeter Home Record.......W 6 - D 6 - L 6 - Pts 24.....Ppg 1.33 (Rank-14)

Wycombe Away Record...W 3 - D 3 - L 12 - Pts 12...Ppg 0.67 (Rank-21)

With ten points from their last five games, Wycombe occupy third place in the current form guide. Tuesday's opponents Exeter are at the other end of the scale having picked up only a single point over the same period.

The Blues' revival has coincided exactly with the signing of loanees Gary Doherty, Craig Eastmond and Paul Hayes who have effectively given the side a new spine.

All three newcomers are on season-long loans but Charlton boss Chris Powell is reportedly considering activating a clause which enables him to recall Doherty and Hayes after 28 days.

Despite their recent improvement, Wycombe have yet to record two wins in a row this season - a situation they would love to remedy on Tuesday night at the expense of fellow strugglers Exeter.

Still in the relegation zone with only nine games remaining, it's crucial that the Blues don't let their standards slip again. They no longer have the luxury of time on their side nor any margin for error.

Six of Wycombe's remaining fixtures are against promotion-chasing sides currently in the top eight. The other three are against teams in the bottom eight who are fighting relegation themselves.

Two years ago Gary Waddock's side staged a late fight for league one survival but ultimately fell short. This time the fight has started earlier and the Blues are five points better off than they were at the same stage in 2010.

A month ago it looked like a lost cause - a win tomorrow would put a totally different complexion on the matter.
