Deadline passes with no defensive reinforcements

Deadline passes with no defensive reinforcements

The January transfer window closed at eleven o'clock this evening with Wycombe Wanderers apparently no closer to solving their defensive problems.

The Blues have conceded 67 goals in 33 games this season and have kept only 2 clean sheets.

This month alone, they've conceded 6 goals at home to Huddersfield, 5 at Brentford, 3 at Preston and 2 at Bournemouth, and yet today's deadline passed with no sign of defensive reinforcements.

Currently rock-bottom of league one, Wycombe's transfer activity over the last few days has seen three players leave the club and two arrive.

Highly rated young winger Kadeem Harris was sold to Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee.

Harris made 10 league starts, 3 cup starts and 13 substitute appearances for the first team during his time with the Blues.

Striker Scott Rendell has been loaned to Oxford United for the remainder of the season.

Rendell was signed from Peterborough United for a reported £125,000 in July 2010 and made 26 league starts, 7 cup starts and 21 substitute appearances for the Blues.

Midfielder Ben Harding has had his recent loan-spell at Northampton Town turned into a permanent deal.

Summer-signing Harding made just 3 league starts, 2 cup starts and 6 substitute appearances for the club.

These January sales follow hot on the heels of Jordon Ibe's December transfer to Liverpool and Kevin Betsy's recent departure "by mutual consent."

Wycombe's new recruits are both nippy little forwards.

5' 6" winger Anthony McNamee had his contract at Franchise terminated by mutual consent earlier today and has signed for the Blues until the end of the season.

McNamee has already been on-loan at Adams Park this season, impressing and scoring in each of his first two games, before his personal performances and that of the whole team took a drastic nosedive against Bournemouth and Huddersfield.

The second deadline-day signing is Watford's 5' 7" forward Matty Whichelow who joins the Blues on a one-month youth loan.

The 20 year-old is described as a versatile attacking midfielder on the Hornets' website.

He apparently impressed manager Gary Waddock when he scored a hat-trick against the Blues in a recent practice match. (No comment).

Whichelow has made 4 league starts, 1 cup start and 18 substitute appearances for Watford, scoring 3 goals.

While on-loan at Exeter City earlier this season he made 3 appearances.

Despite today's deadline passing with no apparent strategy to stem the flood of goals, there's always the loan market which opens again shortly or perhaps Gary Waddock has already lined-up some out-of-contract reinforcements. It's difficult to believe he will do nothing.
