Blues start 2012 looking to pop the Cherries

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Bournemouth on Monday for their 24th league game of the season.

The league table currently shows Wycombe in 21st place with 20 points and Bournemouth in 13th spot with 30 points, both sides having played 23 games.

B'mouth's Home Record.....W 2 - D 2 - L 6 - Pts 8...Ppg 0.80 (Rank-23)

Wycombe's Away Record...W 2 - D 3 - L 6 - Pts 9...Ppg 0.82 (Rank-20)

The Blues' mini-run of three games unbeaten was brought to an end by a narrow defeat to Stevenage at Adams Park on New Years Eve.

After matching their agricultural visitors for more than an hour the Chairboys were yet again unable to hold on and record a clean sheet, conceding the only goal of the game with just eight minutes remaining.

Questions will again be asked about our defensive frailties particularly with the back-four being given little protection from those in front of them, man-of-the-match Matt Bloomfield excepted.

Fortunately an opportunity to bounce back comes quickly with a trip to Dean Court to face AFC Bournemouth in our first action of 2012. It must be said however that we do not have a great record against the Cherries.

The game marks the start of the second half of the season with all 23 of our League One rivals having been played once. Our record of 20 points is less than a point per match and if continued is likely to end in relegation.

To his credit manager Gary Waddock continues to be busy in making changes to his squad so that they might successfully battle against an immediate return to League Two.

Midfielder Ben Harding is the latest to depart, following Jordon Ibe, Kevin Betsy and Elliot Benyon out the door. There is good news with left-back Grant Basey signing permanently on an 18-month deal.

There are however more pressing concerns. Centre-back Dave Winfield had to be helped off the field with what appeared to be a twisted knee and he is out of tomorrow's trip to Bournemouth.

That could see a return to action for James Tunnicliffe, but just like midfielder John Halls, he has seen precious little competitive action in recent weeks and doesn't inspire much confidence.

Thankfully Stuart Lewis is available again after suspension and he will replace Halls and reprise his promising partnership with Bloomfield in the middle of the park.

They are likely to be the only two changes although Marvin McCoy and Joel Grant should both be worried about their places in the starting line-up on Monday.

With a visit from Huddersfield Town up next, the need to pick up points away from home becomes even greater. A second successive defeat is likely to inflict more doom and gloom around Adams Park whereas victory would be the perfect tonic with which to start 2012.
