Blues in danger of being cast adrift

Blues in danger of being cast adrift

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Notts County on Saturday for their 17th league game of the season.

The league table currently shows Wycombe in 23rd place with 12 points and County in 6th spot with 27 points, both sides having played 16 games.

County's Home Record......W 5 - D 1 - L 1 - Pts 16...Ppg 2.29 (Rank-3)

Wycombe's Away Record...W 2 - D 1 - L 5 - Pts 7.....Ppg 0.88 (Rank-19)

Coming into this game on the back of three consecutive defeats, the Blues could probably have done with an easier trip than Notts County.

Only Sheffield Wednesday have won more home games than the Magpies who have taken 16 out of a possible 18 points from their last six outings at Meadow Lane.

Then again, if the Blues are to avoid taking root in the relegation zone like they did two years ago, perhaps it's time they stopped worrying so much about the opposition and started to believe in themselves.

One look at Stevenage should do the trick. They finished 11 points behind Wycombe last season, scraped promotion via the play-offs and barely strengthened during the summer, but have collected twice as many points as the Blues so far this campaign. All on a budget presumably commensurate with their meagre average attendance of 3,521.

So how does a team that's built around the likes of former Chairboy John Mousinho manage to thrive among the supposedly high octane sides of league one? Answers on a postcard to Gary Waddock, although I bet Boro boss Graham Westley would tell you that positive mental attitude plays a big part.

But I digress. Back to Saturday's game, and County manager Martin Allen was interviewed on their website about the possibility of a struggling Wycombe side opting to park the bus and hope for a break.

"Their manager's a very good manager, he's a very good friend of mine, he was very kind to me when I wasn't working," said Allen.

"They've watched us play, they know how we play, and there is that possibility."

"We all know, you don't have to be a rocket scientist, all our supporters will know, if you put ten people behind the ball, defend with just maybe one up front as a lone striker, it's hard to break it down and you've got to be careful on the counter attack."

"That's the challenge that I've got now," he said. "I've got to decide what we're going to do and how we're going to do it, to counter it and to play against it."

On the injury front, County midfielder Gavin Mahon faces a fitness test, striker Ben Burgess is doubtful with a knee injury and defender Stephen Hunt remains sidelined with an ankle problem.

Missing for Wycombe are suspended skipper Gareth Ainsworth and defender James Tunnicliffe who underwent a groin operation earlier in the week.

For those who like omens, the last time Wycombe visited Meadow Lane they recorded an excellent 2-0 victory and later that week were knocked out of the FA Cup by non-league Eastwood Town. Spooky.
