Preview: Shrewsbury Town v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday for their 37th league game of the season.

The league table currently shows Wycombe in 3rd place with 60 points from 36 games and Shrewsbury in 5th spot with 56 points from 36 games

Shrewsbury Home Record...Won 8 - Drawn 7 - Lost 3 - Pts 31 (Rank-7)

Wycombe Away Record......Won 8 - Drawn 4 - Lost 5 - Pts 28 (Rank-3)

Wycombe have played at the New Meadow twice before, both games were considered 'six-pointers' at the time, and the Blues came out on top on both occasions.

In December 2007 the two sides were competing for a play-off spot when Paul Lambert's 7th placed Wycombe beat 9th placed Shrewsbury
1-0 courtesy of a rare goal from John Sutton.

In December 2008 both teams were in the automatic promotion places when Peter Taylor's league-leaders beat 3rd placed Shrewsbury 1-0 thanks to a headed goal from Matt Harrold.

This time it's 3rd v 5th at the business end of the season and Wycombe could certainly do with another win.

With only 10 games remaining, the Blues are in danger of being caught by the chasing pack thanks to an alarming drop in form which has seen them bank only 11 points from their last 10 games.

The Shrews have picked-up 17 points during the same period, but following an impressive run of four consecutive victories, they too have gone off the boil, collecting only 5 points from their last 5 games - the most recent being a 5-0 thumping at Torquay.

The fact that the Blues have faltered recently is indisputable, but the reasons for their decline are a matter of conjecture.

Popular theories include the poor surface at Adams Park making it difficult for Wycombe to play to their strengths, the constant shuffling of central defenders, an imbalance caused by a lack of natural left-sided players, poor service to the strikers, and last but not least, the lack of a prolific goalscorer. Only keeper Nikki Bull seems to have escaped the microscope as worried fans try to understand why things have changed for the worse.

One thing that definitely seems to be missing is confidence, and if the recent 4-1 hammering at Chesterfield is part of the reason for that, then victory in Saturday's big game would be an excellent cure.

Wycombe's midfield dynamo Stuart Lewis is out with ankle ligament damage and left-back Andy Sandell is reportedly a week away from making a return to the squad.

Shrewsbury defender Jermaine Grandison is suspended following his sending-off against Torquay at the weekend.
