'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Opposition View - Macclesfield Town

Following yesterday's gritty 1-0 win at Macclesfield, here are some views on the game from the Silkmen's manager Gary Simpson and a few of their fans.

The main talking point was the brawl at the end of the match and Simpson concentrated his comments on that.

"He's chosen three to send off but it could have been any one of the whole group," he said.

"It detracted from what was a very good performance from us, we lost 1-0 against a team second in the league but we hit the woodwork three times and on another day could have got something out of the game."

The Macclesfield fans were equally unimpressed with the referee and didn't think much of Wycombe either.

The following extracts are taken from Wraggs to Riches.

'Ref was awful, gave us nothing, should have had a pen, and sending off only 3 players in that brawl! - should have been more! We were by far the better team, hit the bar twice, shot cleared off the line and good saves from their keeper. Gutted.'

Goodtobemacc wrote:
'Sorry to disappoint but the keeper-on-Sinclair was never a penalty.'

'How the hell their goalie didn't get sent off I will never know, ran 20/30 yards to start swinging punches left right & centre, he should have gone too.'

'It ended in a fight because there were a mass of yellow shirts running towards one macc player.'

'They were better than us first half, but we had the second.'

'The ref missed so many fouls and kicks on our players. They went up for headers with their knees up a few times to catch our players in the back. He let them get away with it time after time and when Sapp went in late on one of theirs they piled in for a mass brawl.'

luciani wrote:
'He did what most refs would have done for the brawl; Sent off Sappleton for the initial offence, and then chose one from either side for the punch up. He could have sent off 5 or 6 from each team, but no ref is going to do that.'

'It wasn't the best game I have ever seen but I actually enjoyed it (maybe the brawl helped). I thought Wycombe were a better side than us but we could have got something out of the game.'

'A shocking game of football where Wycombe simply 'won ugly' and we did not have the guile to break down a very ordinary looking side.'

'Same old Wycombe, nothing has changed in 20 years. Even our old enemy Alty will recall similar in a Trophy semi-final. Jumped up club from the Thames Valley with no friends other than the BBC.'

'Sack the sapp. He was only on for 10 minutes and he smacks someone in the face. Not played all season and he does that.'

Barry_Lad wrote:
'Sapp was stupid for kicking their player and apparently Sinclair was kicking one of their guys while he was on the floor. They both should be sacked for complete lack of control.'

tomread wrote:
'It did look like Sapp went out of his way to catch the Wycombe player in a cynical manner. Nonetheless, it was disappointing that so many supposed professionals from both teams saw it as their business to get involved.'

maccman wrote:
'I've seen all the 'top' sides now and I have to say that Wycombe are nowhere near as good a side as their position suggests. The other teams have come here and out-footballed us. That lot were just a bunch of spoilers and there was no surprise it ended with a mass brawl.'

Next Game: Chesterfield v Wycombe - Tues 1st March - 7.45pm
