Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Burton Albion

Wycombe Wanderers entertain Burton Albion on Tuesday in their 31st league game of the season.

The league table currently shows Wycombe in 4th place with 50 points from 30 games and Burton in 22nd spot with 29 points from 25 games

Burton's Away Record.........Won 1 - Drawn 4 - Lost 7 - Pts 7 (Rank-24)

Wycombe's Home Record....Won 8 - Drawn 4 - Lost 4 - Pts 28 (Rank-6)

One point from the last possible twelve is not promotion-winning form, and Wycombe will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they play their one remaining game-in-hand over Rotherham and Shrewsbury on Tuesday evening.

A win would propel the Blues back up to second place and they couldn't ask for more benign opposition than a Burton side who have won only once on their travels this season and have the worst away record in League Two for both total points and points-per-game.

Yes, if you're the real deal, there should be nothing to fear playing a side who have scored only nine league-goals away from home all season, six of which were bagged by a player who has since been sold.

Top-scorer Shaun Harrad joined Northampton Town in January having found the net 13 times for Burton this season, including a consolation goal in their 2-1 defeat to Wycombe at the Pirelli Stadium in October. In their four league games since Harrad's departure, the Brewers have scored only one goal

Despite being only one point above the relegation zone, Burton's home-form and plentiful number of games-in-hand should be enough to see them survive the drop.

With Wycombe poised to regain second-spot, a casual observer might be surprised at their fans' current mood, but the Blues have a habit of mucking things up in the second-half of the season, and different era or not, three consecutive defeats is more than enough to set the supporters' nerves jangling.

When things go wrong, everyone wants to pick the team and fans have begun to question some of manager Gary Waddock's selections.

His reluctance to play Leon Johnson has bewildered them all season. They see him as a reliable defender who was voted player of the year in 2008 and can't understand how Waddock could prefer the present incumbents when they keep letting-in soft goals.

Given the Blues' own shortage of goals compared to other top teams, the fans understood the acquisition of Scott Donnelly on-loan, but neither changing the formation to accommodate him, nor sticking him in the centre of a 4-4-2 appears to have helped and has arguably weakened them defensively.

Some may wonder why Ben Strevens played on the left-wing against Accrington, why Stuart Beavon was taken off, or why Gareth Ainsworth remained on the pitch when he looked dead on his feet after an hour, but it won't change a thing. This is Waddock's team now. Saturday's starting-eleven contained ten of his signings with only Beavon remaining from the Peter Taylor era. He's backing his own judgement and will not expect to be judged by the fans until the end of the season.
