Preview: Southend United v Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Southend United on Tuesday for their 29th league game of the season.

The league table currently shows Wycombe in 3rd place with 50 points from 28 games and Southend in 11th spot with 39 points from 28 games

Southend's Home Record....Won 5 - Drawn 3 - Lost 6 - Pts 18 (Rank-16)

Wycombe's Away Record....Won 6 - Drawn 4 - Lost 3 - Pts 22 (Rank-2)

The Blues dropped to third in the table after Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Bradford, but a win against the Shrimpers on Tuesday would see them regain second-spot at the expense of Shrewsbury Town who are without a midweek fixture.

Having collected only one point from their last two games, the Blues will certainly be keen to return to winning ways as soon as possible but Roots Hall may not be the easiest place to start.

Relegated along with Wycombe at the end of last season, the Shrimpers parted company with long-serving manager Steve Tilson during the summer and replaced him with Paul Sturrock.

The new boss immediately began a major overhaul of the Southend squad, bringing in seventeen new faces before the opening day of the season despite a transfer embargo on the club which was finally lifted on 2nd August.

A poor start saw the Shrimpers languishing in 20th place - only one point above the relegation zone - as recently as mid-December, but since then, Sturrock's men have collected 19 points from their last 10 games to give themselves a fighting chance of making the play-offs.

Following an excellent run of 4 wins and 1 draw in their previous 5 games, Southend finally came a cropper last time out - losing 2-0 at home to Shrewsbury Town.

At Roots Hall they've taken the scalps of Torquay, Lincoln, Rotherham, Macclesfield and Oxford in the league, as well as Bristol City and Gillingham in cup competition.

Wycombe remain in a strong position despite dropping 5 points in their last 2 games, but they may have to increase their strike-rate to stay there.

Hardly the most prolific goalscorers, their average number of goals per game in all competitions is 1.47 and in league games alone 1.39, but since the turn of the year, the Blues have only found the net 9 times in 9 games.

It doesn't matter where the goals come from as long as someone's banging them in, and Wycombe have benefitted from having goalscrorers all over the pitch, but they would no doubt prefer to see their strikers on the scoresheet more often.

Ignoring penalties, the Blues' five strikers have scored only 9 goals between them from open play in 28 league games - Strevens: 4, Beavon: 3, Rendell: 1, Pittman: 1 and McClure: 0. Even if you include spot-kicks, the total only rises to 12, which is less than many individual front-men have notched-up for rival teams.

On the other side of the coin, not many sides boast a left-back with 7 goals as their top scorer in the league, but laudable as that is for Andy Sandell, it's hardly realistic to rely on him to fire the Blues to promotion.

It is of course possible to go up without scoring many - as Wycombe fans discovered in 2009, but Peter Taylor's side only conceded 33 league-goals that season - this season the Blues have already conceded 30.

All it needs is one of the strikers to find some form in front of goal and everything will be hunky-dory, and the answer could lie with either Scott Rendell or Jon-Paul Pittman who are both hungry to make their mark having missed so much of the season already.

Sandell is still out injured, and he's been joined by Chris Westwood who exacerbated a groin injury on Saturday and is unlikely to feature against the Shrimpers. Danny Foster may be available again after suffering from a virus.
