The Opposition View - Lincoln City

Following yesterday's 2-1 win at Lincoln City, here are some views on the game from the Imps' assistant manager Paul Brush and a few of their fans.

Brush was less than impressed with his team's defending after a promising start had seen them take a deserved lead.

"For the first 25 minutes we came out and did well, and we could have had the game won by then," he said.

"We had some really good chances, but our defending is not good enough. In the last 20 minutes of the first-half our defending was some of the worst I have seen in my life. We conceded two awful goals."

"What makes it hurt even more is that we've been working on our defending in training during the week, but we just don't seem to be able to do it on the pitch."

The Lincoln fans were also frustrated at their side's defensive frailties and more than a little upset with their keeper.

The following extracts are taken from Vital Lincoln, Lincoln City Mad and The Imps.KA.

'A cheap and poorly executed free kick on the edge of the box changed the game and in particular the remainder of the first half. Wycombe woke up and came at us a bit more, hit the bar and Anyon saved a penalty (although it was going wide anyway). A minute or so later we've not reacted to a set piece and their guy's nodded in from 4 yards. Second half we have chances again, and if the Wycombe keeper hasn't had such a good game we win 4-2 or 5-2.'

'First half hour was fine and if that's a promotion chasing side we saw in Wycombe for the first 30 minutes then virtually everyone has a chance. Crawley and Wimbledon would have seen them off.'

'I can see improvement when we go forward but our defence is letting us down. On the whole, it wasn't the worst game I've seen, we showed some flashes of good football. I didn't think Wycombe were all that good if I'm honest, their defence was weak at times.'

'We looked good and could have been two or three up, then they scored and that was the end of us. Heads went down and it was cock-up after cock-up at the back.'

'After a really good 20 minutes playing well, scoring a decent goal and creating chances, we are subjected to a howler from Joke Anyon and are then completely shot to pieces - it's embarrassing to see them try and defend.'

'Spineless. Well maybe not quite, but there are definitely slipped discs at the top of the spine. A confident goalkeeper and an experienced centre half would take the pressure off our nerves and enable us to turn the precious goals we're scoring into points.'

Nathan Jackson wrote:
'Joke Anyon is the reason we will go down. Ignore the rest of the squad, we will never get off the bottom of the table whilst this clown is in the net. With him in goal we need at least two goals ourselves to be able to get anything out of the game. Don't praise him for the penalty save because it was going wide anyway.'

Irishimp wrote:
'Wycombe were really under the cosh today until Anyon made another complete horlicks. His mistake had a deflationary effect on the team and for the following 20 minutes they couldn't recover.'

'We need a sports psychologist to have a word with our players; as soon as we score we sit deep and invite pressure, and as soon as the opposition score we completely fall apart. It's as though the players are terrified. There's something fundamentally wrong with their mindset.'
