FA Cup Preview - Hayes & Yeading v Wycombe

Wycombe Wanderers travel to Hayes & Yeading United on Saturday in the first round of the FA Cup.

Wycombe are 5th in League Two with 25 points from 15 games.

Hayes & Yeading are 20th in the Blue Square Premier with 17 points from 17 games.

United's Home Record (All competitions)........Won 3 - Drawn 0 - Lost 6

Wycombe's Away Record (All competitions)....Won 5 - Drawn 4 - Lost 0

Following the merger of Hayes FC and Yeading FC in 2007, the newly formed Hayes & Yeading United spent two seasons in the Conference South, before winning the play-off final against Hampton and Richmond in May 2009 to gain promotion to the Blue Square Premier where they finished 17th last season.

Since the merger, United have failed to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup until this season, losing in the fourth qualifying round to Maidenhead United in 2007, Oxford United in 2008 and Staines Town in 2009.

Prior to joining forces, Hayes' best FA Cup runs were in 1972/73 and 1999/00 when they reached the second round proper before losing replays to Reading and Hull City respectively.

Yeading went one better by reaching the third round proper in 2004/05 where they lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle United.

Wycombe have met Hayes many times in cup competitions going back as far as 1923, most notably in the FA Amateur Cup Final at Highbury in 1931 when the Chairboys collected the trophy with a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from Alf Britnell.

More recently, the two sides met in the FA Cup first round in 2001 when Wycombe won 4-3 in a thriller at Church Road - the venue for this Saturday's game.

United's top scorer this season is no longer with the club. Ben Wright was on-loan from Peterborough, but subsequently signed for Crawley Town only to be loaned out again - this time to Newport County.

They do however have Adrian Patulea in their ranks. On-loan from Orient, the Romanian striker played for the O's in their 1-0 win at Adams Park last season.

Another familiar face is former Blues' youngster Tom Cadmore who joined Hayes & Yeading on-loan in 2007 before signing permanently in 2008.

Wycombe have had a lean time of it in the FA Cup since their famous journey to the semi-final in 2001. The following season they reached the third round before losing a replay at Fulham, but apart from that it's been a succession of first or second round exits for the men in blue quarters

United's last outing was a 1-0 home defeat to bottom club Altrincham, while Wycombe won their fifth away-game in a row on Tuesday evening, beating Gillingham 2-0 at the Priestfield Stadium.

Unbeaten away from home in all competitions, the Blues have taken some notable scalps on their travels and are strong favourites to win at Church Road and progress to the next round.

But this is the FA Cup.

The Man In The Middle

Saturday's referee is Dave Phillips from Sussex who was promoted to the National List of Referees in 2008. He's previously taken charge of two Wycombe games, the 1-1 draw at home to Darlington in October 2008 when he sent off Chris Zebroski - a decision which was later rescinded - and the 2-1 defeat at home to Huddersfield Town in April of this year. During the current campaign he's issued 2 red and 32 yellow cards in 10 games.
