Preview: Burton Albion v Wycombe Wanderers


Wycombe Wanderers travel to Burton Albion on Saturday for their 11th league game of the season.

The league table currently shows Wycombe in 7th place with 15 points and Burton in 10th spot with 14 points.

Not content with winning two league games in a row, the Blues gave their fans even more reason to be cheerful on Tuesday evening when they beat old rivals Colchester United 2-0 on their own patch to turf them out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. If a lack of confidence was affecting the players earlier this season, it certainly shouldn't be now, and they will look forward to their first ever visit to Burton's Pirelli Stadium with high hopes of making it four wins in a row.

Manager Gary Waddock made five changes in the midweek cup win over the U's but will be tempted to return to same starting eleven that won comfortably at Stevenage last weekend. That would mean recalls for defenders Danny Foster and Alan Bennett with Chris Westwood starting after coming as a sub to replace the injured Leon Johnson at Colchester. Midfielder Matt Bloomfield and winger Gareth Ainsworth are also set to return.

Dave Winfield didn't look overly comfortable in midweek in his first start since falling ill but he could well be the man to combat the physical style of Brewers' strikers Shaun Harrad and Greg Pearson.

Marvin McCoy certainly did his reputation no harm with an encouraging performance in midweek and there are some supporters who would like to see him push Danny Foster for the right-back slot.

Scott Rendell continues to struggle in attack and his languid style certainly isn't winning over the supporters. His lack of goals from open play is certainly nothing new for the supporters who have seen plenty of strikers take their time in finding their feet at Adams Park. Hopefully he will find the net at the weekend and it will do for him what it did for Jermaine Easter.

Scott Davies began to the look like the player we know he is during the latter stages of the win over Colchester. He has all the skills in his locker and with the confidence that comes with match sharpness he could soon start to make the impact on games that saw him shine during his time with Aldershot Town.

Seasoned watchers of Wycombe will be wary of our current winning run that has now stretched to three games. That diminishes the chances of making it four and the two-man band that now guide the good ship Vital Wycombe through the choppy internet waters are renowned pessimists. Yet victory at the Pirelli Stadium could take the Chairboys as high as 4th place in the table. That would be much closer to the high expectations of many supporters and would turn an underwhelming start to the season into one with real promise. On the flip side, defeat could see the Blues drop into the bottom half. What price the draw?
