Can Wycombe do the double over in-form Millwall?

Can Wycombe do the double over in-form Millwall?

Wycombe Wanderers entertain Millwall on Saturday in their 32nd league game of the season.

The league table currently shows the Lions in 6th place with 52 points from 30 games, while the Chairboys occupy 23rd spot with 24 points from 31 games.

Millwall's away record is............Won 3, Drawn 6, Lost 5.
Wycombe's home record is.......Won 3, Drawn 3, Lost 9.

The Lions arrive at Adams Park as the division's in-form side, having won their last five league games and only conceded a single goal in the process.

It may seem daunting for the Chairboys, but they can take heart from their superb 2-0 win at the New Den earlier this season and will be aiming for all three points again on Saturday as they attempt to close the gap between themselves and safety.

Another encouraging factor for Wycombe is their record against top-half opposition. With 16 of their 24 points having been won against the division's stronger sides, it would appear the Chairboys raise their game when they're not expected to win.

Since the victory over Millwall in November, Wycombe manager Gary Waddock has signed eleven new players, with three of them arriving in the last week alone, as he attempts to bolster a defence which has proved vulnerable far too often this season.

Keeper Tom Heaton, on-loan from Manchester United, made his debut last Saturday at Brentford, while full-back Julian Kelly and centre-back Alan Bennett joined at the beginning of this week and will be in contention for a place in the starting line-up against the Lions.

Unbeaten away from home in 2010, Wycombe will be hoping to transfer some of that fine form back to Adams Park, which has been more of a sand castle than a fortress this season, particularly in recent weeks with the Chairboys losing their last four home games, including embarrassingly heavy defeats to relegation rivals Brighton and mid table Yeovil Town.

One Millwall player who will be looking forward to facing the Chairboys again on Saturday is Jonathan Obika who joined the Lions on-loan from Spurs earlier this month. Previously on-loan at Yeovil, Obika scored in the Glovers 4-0 win over Wycombe on Boxing day and also featured in their 4-1 win at Adams Park only a fortnight ago.

Lions' top scorer Neil Harris is another player the Blues will need to watch. Unavailable for Millwall the last time the two sides met, the veteran striker is in fine form and has scored thirteen goals already this season, including one in each of his last two games.

Most Wycombe fans would agree that since Gary Waddock took over as manager, the Chairboys have been more entertaining to watch, and that some of their performances, particularly away from home, have belied their lowly league position.

The problem is, too many of these good performances have only resulted in draws, with the games against Colchester, Exeter, Leeds, Southend and Brentford immediately springing to mind as examples.

While many supporters remain optimistic about their chances of escaping relegation, Wycombe are quickly running out of games and it's now time for the honourable draws and unlucky defeats to be converted into wins if they are to have any hope of pulling off what would certainly be a great escape.

Saturday would be a good time to start.
