Wycombe turn down Phillips bids

Wycombe Wanderers owner Steve Hayes has revealed that the club rejected two offers for starlet Matt Phillips on transfer deadline-day.

Speaking to the Bucks Free Press, Hayes refused to say who the interested parties were or how much they offered, but was clear in his determination to hang-on to the exciting prospect.

'We could have sold Matt Phillips but we didn't want to,' he said.

'We had two bids and we rejected them both, they were decent bids but they weren't even tempting.'

Although conceding that a 'ridiculous bid with a big sell-on clause' might have warranted consideration, Hayes said he wasn't worried about losing Phillips in January either.

'We've got to protect players and he needs protecting,' he said, adding that things have happened very quickly for Phillips, who is still developing.

'Too many players get a big move too early and burn out,' said Hayes.

Matt Phillips is under contract with the Chairboys until June 2011.
