Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Peterborough United

On Tuesday evening Wycombe Wanderers entertain Peterborough United in the first round of the Carling Cup.

Both clubs gained automatic promotion last season with Wycombe moving up to League One and Peterborough earning a place in the Championship with their second successive promotion under manager Darren Ferguson.

It's only 16 months since the two sides last met, when a late penalty from Scott McGleish earned Wycombe a 2-2 draw in a League Two fixture at Adams Park in front of a crowd of 6,202.

On Saturday, Posh began their Championship season with a 2-1 defeat to Derby County at Pride Park in front of 33,010 fans.

At the same time, The Chairboys lost 3-2 to Charlton Athletic at The Valley in front of a 16,552 crowd.

Changed days for both clubs then, as they begin to reap the rewards of their recent success and find thememselves playing on bigger stages.

Tuesday's match also raises the possibility of former Chairboys Russell Martin and Sergio Torres returning to Adams Park.

Both players joined Peterborough last summer with defender Martin soon taking over as captain of the Posh. After skippering the side to promotion last season and playing in all 46 league games, Martin will be disappointed to have been dropped to the bench for Saturday's opening fixture against Derby.

Torres on the other hand, only managed 10 league starts for his new club last season and is currently on the transfer list. The chances of him resurrecting his career with Posh seem slim and he didn't feature among the seven substitutes Peterborough named on Saturday. It seems a shame that the popular Argentinian whose skill shone through at times for Wycombe in League Two is now kicking his heels on the sidelines.

The Man In The Middle

Tuesday's referee is Trevor Kettle, an RAF Air Traffic Controller who joined the National list of Referees in 2003. His last game involving Wycombe was the 2-1 defeat at home to Notts County on the final day of last season.

Team News

Wycombe will be without the injured Tommy Doherty, Ian Westlake, Lewis Hunt, Lewwis Spence and TJ Moncur.

Peterborough will be without Craig Morgan who has been called up by Wales and Paul Coutts who is injured.

Hopefully this match will give Wycombe the chance to quickly build on the fine second-half performance they gave against Charlton on Saturday.

It would be no surprise to see Leon Johnson restored to a creaking central defence, while the fine performances of second-half substitutes Stuart Beavon and Jon-Paul Pittman must surely put them in the frame to start on Tuesday.
