League One Points Targets

As newly promoted Wycombe Wanderers embark on a new season in League One, let's take a look at how many points they are likely to need to avoid relegation, make the play-offs, or for the uber optimists among you, gain automatic promotion.

Here are some divisional stats from the last seven seasons:

Points gained by team in final relegation place (21st)

2002/03: Cheltenham........ 48 points
2003/04: Grimsby Town ....50 points
2004/05: Torquay Utd ...... 51 points
2005/06: Hartlepool.......... 50 points
2006/07: Chesterfield....... 47 points
2007/08: Bournemouth..... 48 points
2008/09: Northampton...... 49 points

Average:....49 points

So, as a rule of thumb, 50 points should be the first target.

Points gained by team in final play-off place (6th)

2002/03: Cardiff City......81 points
2003/04: Hartlepool.......73 points
2004/05: Hartlepool.......71 points
2005/06: Swansea........71 points
2006/07: Oldham..........75 points
2007/08: Southend........76 points
2008/09: Scounthorpe...76 points

Average:....74.7 points

Once you've banked the first 50 points, it's only another 25 and the play-off lottery beckons.

Points gained by team in final automatic promotion place (2nd)

2002/03: Crewe............86 points
2003/04: QPR...............83 points
2004/05: Hull City.........86 points
2005/06: Colchester......79 points
2006/07: Bristol City......85 points
2007/08: Nott'm Forest...82 points
2008/09: Peterborough...89 points

Average:....84.3 points

Why stop at the play-offs? An extra 10 points will almost certainly clinch you automatic promotion, although poor old Franchise did manage to miss out with 87 points last season. Very unlucky that.

The Chairboys will attempt to put their first points on the board when they face Charlton Athletic at the Valley this Saturday.

How are you expecting to do this season? Looking at another promotion or something more mid-table?

Lack of goals will probably stop us from making the top-half of the table, but I don't think we'll be relegated.
