Preview: Wycombe Wanderers v Grimsby Town

Wycombe Wanderers return to action on Saturday when Grimsby Town visit Adams Park for a League Two fixture.

The Mariners are having a poor season and currently lie 22nd in League Two, having collected 14 points from 23 games. They would actually be rock-bottom of the table and 6 points away from safety, were it not for the points deductions imposed on Bournemouth and Luton who are the only two sides currently below them in the league.

At the start of the season Grimsby picked up only 3 points from their first 9 league games. Mike Newell then took over as manager and things have slightly improved for the Mariners with the new boss collecting 11 points from his 14 games in charge.

The weather has prevented the Mariners from playing since Dec 28th when they lost 3-1 at Accrington. December also saw them lose to Port Vale and Notts County. It wasn't all gloom though, they did beat Shrewsbury 1-0 and take a point from a difficult trip to Aldershot which ended 2-2.

Grimsby have scored 19 league goals (9 away from home) and have conceded 42 (25 away from home).

15 different players have scored for the Mariners in all competitions and their top marksmen are Nick Hegarty and Adam Proudlock with 3 goals apiece.

Wycombe are top of League Two with 49 points from 24 games.

The Chairboys had last Saturday off due to the weather. The previous week they deservedly beat Bury 2-1 in a much improved performance after two below-par displays saw them draw successive games against Exeter and Gillingham. They remain unbeaten at Adams Park and have only lost once in their 24 league games so far.

Wycombe have scored 33 league goals (20 at home) and have conceded 14 (8 at home).

12 different players have scored for Wycombe in all competitions and the top marksman is Matt Harrold with 10 goals. Next highest scorer is Chris Zebroski who had found the net 6 times before his enforced absence through injury. On-loan teenager Angelo Balanta is rapidly making his way up the scoring charts, having found the net 3 times in only 7 starts. Defender Mike Williamson is also on 3 goals, as is last season's top scorer Scott McGleish, who has just returned from his loan spell at Northampton.

Current League Form

Grimsby : LWDLL - 4 points

Last Five Home Games
Wycombe: WWDDW - 11 points

Earlier this season Wycombe banked a valuable point thanks to a last minute equaliser from Leon Johnson in a 1-1 draw at Blundell Park.

Last season the Blues did the double over Grimsby. A rare Gary Holt goal and 2 from Scott McGleish gave Wycombe a 3-0 win at Adams Park and then Sergio Torres scored his final goal for the club in a 1-0 win at Blundell Park.

Ref Watch

This week's referee is Mr. G D Scott

This is Mr Scott's first campaign as a Football League referee and he has yet to oversee a Wycombe game. So far this season he has taken charge of 17 games and has issued 7 red and 45 yellow cards. His last match was Colchester v Orient during which he booked 8 players and sent 1 off.

Team News

Tommy Doherty is available again after suspension.

Scott McGleish is available for selection after returning from his loan-spell at Northampton.

Newly signed defender Chris Casement is available for selection.

Chris Zebroski may be available for selection after his lay-off through injury.

New signing TJ Moncur is doubtful through injury.

David McCracken is doubtful through injury.

Lewis Hunt will be out for two months with a broken bone in his foot.

Grimsby's New January Transfer Window Signings

Joe Widdowson
- West Ham to Grimsby on Loan (Defender)

Dean Sinclair - Charlton to Grimsby on Loan (Midfielder)

Stuart Elliot - Doncaster to Grimsby on Loan (Midfielder)

Peter Till
- Grimsby to Chesterfield on Loan (Midfielder)

Grimsby may be at the wrong end of League Two but it would be foolish to write them off as their best results this season have come against teams in the top half of the table. Nevertheless, an on-form Wycombe team should have enough quality to take all three points and keep their promotion charge going.
